Title: The Dog Days of Laurie Summer
Author: Patricia Gaffney
Summary: A woman named Laurie Summer went into a coma after drowning in the river. Yet, when she woke up, she realised that she had become a dog. Coincidentally, her husband, Sam, and son, Benny, adopted the dog as they had run over it and called the dog Sonoma. In the body of the dog, Laurie began to understand more of her husband and son. Also, she had realised that she should have spent more time with her family rather than keep on working to earn more money. In the end, she went back to her real body and had changed for better.
Remark: I think that it is a plain and delightful story which highlights the importance of kinship and the need to value it. We should not take it for granted and assume that we will always have time with the family as no one knows what will happen in the next moment. Although earning money to raise the standard of living of the family is important, it is also critical to keep the family together as closely as possible. It is something easy to grasp but if compared to the first story in the compilation (Missing in Death), it can be a tad bit boring as it does not have the suspense and action which the first story possessed.
